Next week Spring officially begins, and I am looking forward to some sunny days and spending time in the garden.

The background for this card is the same as that used for my “Wooden Boat” post. After sponging my card with ‘Peeled Paint’ and ‘Spiced Marmalade’ Distress inks, I laid a leaf stencil over and spritzed water through. Lift off stencil and dry with paper towel. I then applied some gold ‘Perfect pearl’ powder with a dry paint brush over parts of it. Dry with a heat gun. Stamp script writing over in black ink.

I cut the Bo Bunny leaf die out of some card I had sprayed with Distress Stain sprays matching my background colours.

I ran a brown pencil down the stalk and each individual leaf. Place the leaf on an upside down mouse pad, and follow the pencil line down the center of each leaf with a stylus tool to crease. Bend leaves gently with fingers to create a bit of dimension.

Glue leaf onto a square of cream card, matting onto a dark brown card. Attach to card front, slipping a skeleton leaf beneath top left corner that has had some gold leaf glued onto it.

Add 3 dots of Gold Liquid Pearls beneath main leaf square.

The use of stencils in your background can add dimension to your card, without adding any thickness.

  1. first spray a white card with various blue Distress Stain sprays. Dry card.
  2. lay a seaweed stencil over card. Spritz water through. Dry card.
  3. sponge a blue ink through select sections of the same stencil.
  4. stamp the coral corner. Colour in shells and seaweed and highlight bits with Liquid Pearls.
  5. stamp jellyfish image onto card. Apply Glossy Accent and leave to dry.
  6. cut out dies of the tiny fish and large seaweed. Colour them. Apply Distress Stickles to seaweed die.
  7. glue dried pieces onto card and assemble card layers.

Gumnut Baby Writers

Another lockdown, another day in the craft room. Gotta feel sorry for those people without hobbies.

I am on a mission to use up some of my scraps, as my drawers are overflowing. Most are too small to use as a border all the way around, but I am not averse to combining patterns and textures together of smaller bits which hopefully compliment the focal design. I have stamped my images onto what would have been the 2nd or 3rd lift from some stenciled gelli-plate prints, so the patterns are a little faint or incomplete, but still interesting.

Beach Memories

This was an experimental background I did with a shimmer texture paste through a stencil, which after allowing to dry, I sprayed a shimmer blue dye ink over. I sponged the edges with sepia ink before assembling my card layers. The stamps are from the ‘Retro Beach’ stamp set by Rubber Dance co.

Bugs Abound

Summer, a time when you really notice all the bugs about.

The Insect stencil in the background is by Alexandra Renke, the dragonfly stamp by Stamp-it. After colouring the card with Distress Stains, I tried spritzing water through the stencil first to bleach the colour from the insect shapes, but this didn’t work to my liking as it lost too much detail, so instead I sponged a darker blue ink through, then outlined each shape with a fine blue marker. Some more experimenting needed with that stencil.

I used Tim Holtz ‘Frosted Film’ for the dragonfly. This is a really cool product (though hard to find sometimes). I stamped the dragonfly onto it, then cut it out. When heated with a heat gun, this frosted film will start to curl. While warm, you can mold it into whatever shape you like. When it cools, it will retain that shape. So I heated his wings to create the appearance of movement, but made sure his body remained flat to better enable gluing down. I smeared some Turquoise Stickles over the frosted underneath side, and set aside to dry before gluing it into place over the stamped image on my card. The smooth upper side of the film catches the light, but being opaque, you can see the sparkly turquoise colour showing through from beneath, while still retaining the fine line details of his wing segments.

Using the same Distress Stain colours, I created a similar background (below), this time stamping a large ‘Beetle Collage’ stamp (from Woodware) over in black. I then silver embossed a circular birthday wording (from Stamp-it) and lay a disc in the center stamped with a bug image (from Amazing Creations) which I covered with Glossy Accents.

Collecting Seashells

Despite all the prints I have made with my new Gelli Plate, so far I seem to have used more of the scrap paper I cleaned my brayer on, as backgrounds for my cards. I quite liked the 3 colours combined on this piece of scrap, so I sponged some white paint through a shell stencil over it. I printed this quote from my computer onto it, before tearing it in half to create the 2 cards. I stamped the girls into position, then again onto scrap card which I coloured and cut out, gluing them over original image. Both stamps are from Stamps Happen, so are old sorry and may no longer be available. I’m really happy with the way the cards turned out.

The Perfect Pair

This was a background I started ages ago and could never find the right shape for the foreground until my new pear dies arrived and I felt they were the perfect accompaniment.

I achieved the background effect by first smearing texture paste through a damask stencil.

When dry I spritzed the card with Spun Sugar Distress Stain spray.

I tore a piece of floral napkin (that I had removed backing layers from) and glued it onto card. I used a Matt Glue so I could use it as a glue to attach napkin and also to act as a sealer over the top.

When dry I sandpapered raised areas lightly to show up the damask pattern better. I know I took photos of this process but they seem to have disappeared into cyber space somewhere sorry.

With the background complete, it was just a matter of attaching card layers and adding wording cut in gold foilboard and the 2 pears. The pears were cut from a card sprayed with Antique Linen, Crushed Olive and Victorian Velvet Distress Stain sprays. I Magic Mounted the smaller one at the front and stamped ‘Love’ onto back one.
